Bison Football Team Honors Former Player

Posted: Updated:

Before Friday's Great Falls High School football scrimmage, Derek Dowson's number 40 jersey was honored.

First year head coach Mark Samson brought the jersey out of retirement after it was tucked away for eleven years.

Dowson played linebacker for the Bison before he died in an electrical accident in 2005.

His jersey was given to current linebacker Bryce Brinkman who will wear it in Derek's honor this season.

Derek's mother, Angie Dowson, was touched by the gesture.

"We're all excited, our whole family is, that it gets to be brought back onto the field again," she said. "It's just an awesome way to remember Derek so we are very honored. He was a natural athlete but he worked 100 percent of the time so hopefully that will give them some motivation; if you play hard, good things happen."

Brinkman will receive the jersey on Big Blue Day.
