10/10 Senior Standout: Great Falls High's Sarah Dutro

Posted: Updated:

The motto for the Great Falls High Lady Bison is, "Champions aren't born, they're made." That motto is especially true for senior captain Sarah Dutro.

"We've seen her grow so much and I'm extremely proud of the person she's become," said head coach Katherine Sunwall.

Dutro threw herself into Bison athletics when she first joined the volleyball, basketball, and track team her freshman year. She says her journey to the top has helped her lead her younger teammates.

"These younger girls look up to me," Dutro said. "I know exactly how they feel. I was one of those girls. So it feels really good cause you can relate to them. You just wanna do what's best for them"

However, sports aren't the only thing that consumes Dutro's life.

"She's a 4.0 student, she's National Honor Society, student council, homecoming candidate, I don't know what else she hasn't done. She's perfect," said senior right side hitter Stephaney Fellows.

Besides being a leader on the court, her teammates say Sara has helped them in their daily lives.

"Every day when I come to practice or a game or something, if I'm in a bad mood or anything, I just know she'll cheer me up," said junior middle hitter Molly Schmitz.

Those who have been involved in Dutro's journey as a Bison have seen how she's able to shine.

"She's just that one person that we all look to," Schmitz said.

"I can't even describe how great she is and what she means to us in the program," Sunwall added.

While Sarah may be balancing sports and schoolwork between August and June, she says athletics have taught her lessons she couldn't have learned anywhere else.

"You control what's going on on your side and what's going on with yourself. Don't let other people control what's going on in your life. You take control," Dutro said.

From volleyball nets to basketball hoops to pole vaulting, it hasn't always been smooth sailing for Sarah, but it's all what has made her a champion.
