A days work just got a little safer for Great Falls' finest. Five police officers are now equipped with new life saving body armor. a group called the Exchange Club, bought the new body armor after learning the GFPD couldn't afford it.
Of the 5 officers, 3 are from Great Falls Animal Control and while they're not sworn officers, they still go into emotional and sometimes dangerous situations.
"They have a unique job to do to protect the citizens and themselves in the community so we feel that everyone needs to be protected and safe on their job,"said Scott Karafa, The Exchange Club President.
Just to give you an idea of how expensive they are, one bullet proof vest can cost more than $900.00. The club donated enough to cover over 95% for the additional body armor.
Officers said they wouldn't be able to do what they do without support from the community and groups like this. They added it feels good knowing their community cares about them.
The Department of Justice offers a program that helps departments like the GFPD buy body armor at half the normal cost.
