State Supreme Court Justice Candidates: Sandefur vs. Juras

Posted: Updated:

Great Falls - A seat for the Montana Supreme Court is up for grabs on the ballot on Tuesday.  Cascade County District Court Judge Dirk Sandefur faces off against University of Montana law professor Kristen Juras.

KFBB interviewed both candidates on Monday. Judge Sandefur spoke of his 30 plus years of experience. He has served as District Judge for the 8th District Court since 2002. Before that, he worked as a county attorney, and now he says his plan over the next 24 hours is to share his experience and message with voters.

Judge Sandefur says he's running for Supreme Court Justice because he wants to continue to serve Montanans. As a Justice, he says he would bring his past experience of being fair and impartial to the table. KFBB also asked Judge Sandefur what he would like voters to know about him and here's what he had to say.

"I've got a track record for 14 years of deciding the most complex cases that come before Montana's courts, fairly, impartially and without consider of partisan politics or anybody's agenda," said Judge Sandefur.

KFBB also spoke with Sandefur's opponent, Kristen Juras. She says she's seeking the Justice position because she wants to bring diversity to the state's Supreme Court. She's a private practice attorney in Great Falls and also teaches law at the University of Montana. When KFBB asked her what voters should know about her, here's what she had to say.

"We would be the only Justice for example who has filed, perfected and defended water rights claims and water rights is one of many important issues that will be coming before the court," said Juras.

Whoever wins Tuesday will be replacing Justice Patricia O'Brien Cotter. She is retiring after serving 15 years on the court. Of course, we will keep you updated with the latest election results here on ABC Fox Montana News and online as well.
