The Carroll College football team fell to No. 9 Eastern Oregon 27-17 to close out the season Saturday at Nelson Stadium.
The Mountaineers ran for 306 yards and passed for another 144 en route to the win. The Saints also had three turnovers to just one for EOU.
The Saints got on the board first with a 23-yard field goal from Colter Hamel with 11:26 left in the second quarter but the Mounties would answer.
On the ensuing drive, EOU drove 59 yards in nine plays to set up the field goal attempt. Nathan Harden's attempt was good to notch the game at 3-3 with 7:25 left in the half.
The Mountaineers again drove into the Carroll redzone at the end of the half but the Carroll defense held and force another field goal. EOU took a 6-3 lead into the break.
The opening kickoff of the second half was devastating for the Saints. Ryan Walsh returned the kickoff to 30-yard line where a big hit from Alonso Mendoza dislodged the ball. Mendoza recovered the fumble and returned it to the Carroll 21-yard line.
The Mounties took advantage and scored the first touchdown of the game on an Alfred Gross 3-yard touchdown run.
Carroll answered on their ensuing drive with an 11-play, 84-yard touchdown drive, capped off with a 13-yard pass from JT Linder to Conner Poulson to cut the lead to 13-10 with 7:30 to play in the third quarter.
Two minutes later it was EOU who found paydirt. On third-and-9, deep in Carroll territory, Zach Bartlow was forced out of the pocket and scrambled for 58-yards. The big gain set up a 23-yard touchdown pass from Bartlow to Brenden Kelly to put EOU up 20-10 with 5:50 left in the third.
Carroll answered with a 49-yard touchdown from Linder to Connor Fohn to again cut the deficit to 3, 20-17.
EOU extended the advantage back to 10 early in the fourth quarter with a touchdown from Bartlow to Kelly in the back of the endzone, the score would hold.
The two teams traded possessions and the Saints were driving with a chance to make it a one-score game but an interception with 4:45 left in the game essentially sealed Carroll's fate.
Dylan Green led the rushing attack for Carroll with 39 yards on seven attempts. Major Ali tallied 35 yards on six carries. Fohn had three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown and Troy Arntson notched five catches for 54 yards.
JT Linder was 17-of-28 for 171 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked three times.
The Saints tallied 268 yards of total offense to 450 for EOU.
