The Jefferson boys came off of an impressive season that saw an appearance in the District 5B Championship and Southern B Division Tournament. They finished fourth at the state tournament, and this season, they return two starters - only one of those is a senior. They lost three seniors last season, so the offense is going to look a little different this year, but Coach Clint Layng said good teams must be able to adapt on a constant basis.
"You know, I think we are fairly athletic," said Coach Layng. "We don't have a lot of big guys, but we have a bunch of guys who are 6' to 6'4", so I think we'll be pretty versatile in what we can do."
"We only have one senior on the team so I think it'll be good for us to learn how to play as a team," said senior guard Josh Eckmann. "I think we'll be a lot better come February than we are here in December."
The Jefferson girls are under first-year head coach Carson Klass. The girls only won five games last year, but spirits are high in practice, and the expectation is to make it to the Southern B Divisional Tournament. Coach Carson Klass has done a lot of explaining during practice, and the girls seem to respond to his visual instruction approach. Coach Klass says he thinks that will pay dividends in their first game, especially on the offensive end.
"With the just the way the girls way work, I anticipate a lot of motion a lot screening a lot of cutting to the hoop," said Coach Klass. "We will be implementing some fast breaks and some press as well. We have an athletic group of girls so anticipate us getting after girls."
