UPDATE Crews battle 'Meyers Fire' near Pintler Wilderness boundary

Posted: Updated:

DILLON- A fire is ongoing at Meyers Creek near the Pintler Wilderness boundary line.

The Philipsburg Ranger Station says, the fire is three miles southwest of Moose Lake and is currently spread over 45 acres. There is a full-suppression management strategy in place to suppress the fire and it is 10 percent contained. This strategy includes looking for areas of opportunities and using water buckets to drop water on the highest priority areas that could escape outside from the fire line area.

To help execute the strategy there are 60 members of nearby hot shot fire crews exerting major efforts to fight the blaze in addition to a helicopter in the area. The crews have a base camp setup at Moose Lake Cabin in order to have easier access routes to the blaze.

Incident manager Brian Anderson says "There's about a five mile drive up to where they can get the closest access point to the fire from that access point on the road there is an additional three and a half mile hike they have to go to just to get to the fire everyday."

Officials at Philipsburg Ranger Station have confirmed this fire is the priority due to the risk of the blaze reaching camp grounds and nearby homes.

Anderson says "Right now its in a very remote area but if it continues to go downhill it can impact houses by the moose lake area."

The fire started from a lightening strike that hit the area earlier in the weekend and is one of many fires in the surrounding area.
