Drunken brawl leaves one man fighting for his life

Posted: Updated:

Great Falls, MT - A Great Falls man was charged with aggravated assault after he admitted to police that he repeatedly punched, elbowed, and kneed an unconscious man in the face, leaving him with a brain injury and fighting for his life.

Yesterday morning, GFPD went to a house after  they received a call about an unconscious man who had been in a fight with another man. When the officers arrived, emergency medical personnel were working on a man who appeared to be in serious distress.

According to the police report, officers spoke with a man living at the house, who identified himself as Darionn Douglas. GFPD noted Douglas appeared to have been in a fight, having an injured nose and a chipped left front tooth.

Douglas told officers that he and the other man had been drinking. They ended up having a verbal argument and they challenged each other to a fight. According to Douglas's interview with police, the victim hit Douglas first, breaking his nose and tooth. Douglas then told officers he kicked the other man in the face, knocking him unconscious. Officers say he admitted he repeatedly punched, elbowed, and kneed the man in the face after he was already unconscious.

The police report states Benefis medical staff informed officers that the victim's condition was dire, with a serious, debilitating brain injury. Medical staff said there is a chance the man won't survive.

According to police, Douglas's actions were not taken in self-defense and he caused serious bodily injury to an unconscious person.

Darionn Douglas was convicted of partner assault in 2009 that was deferred and dismissed.

Douglas is being charged with one count of Aggravated Assault, a felony.

The State has requested bond be set at $75,000.
