Alternative communication, how to get in contact with people affected by Irma

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Hurricane Irma touched down Sunday and showed its muscle. The Hurricane has been downgraded to a hurricane one, but the aftermath still looms.  So, what if you have loved ones in the area and can’t reach them?

Make sure you think of alternative ways for communication.

  1. Check social media - If phone lines are down, reach out on social media. Facebook offers a safety check. This is a way for people to communicate with their loved ones during a crisis. You can reach out to them, and they can reach out to you.
  2. Apps - There is an app for everything, including one for communicating. The most downloaded app on the app store right now is called Zello. This app allows you to use your phone as a walkie talkie or a two-way radio. But, you have to have some sort of Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
  3. Ham radio - If your situation has gotten really bad, you can try to reach out over ham radio. You could get in contact t with the Red Cross to see if your friends or loved ones are checked in and accounted for somewhere.
