Turkey served with a side of love at Shellie's

Posted: Updated:

HELENA, Mont.-Several big chain restaurants open their doors on big holidays like today, but what about local joints? Why would one of those establishments stay open when they don't have a corporate boss mandating them to serve? Well, for some like the folks at Shellie's Country Cafe, it is simply a family tradition.

Owner of the diner, Shellie Mitchell says its not about making a profit, it is about making a product that makes people happy.

Although she did say its a bit of a chore. Shellie prepares most of the food by herself, she has been cooking since four this morning. Even so, serving others on Thanksgiving is one of her favorite times of the year.

"We love the thanksgiving crowd and a lot of our customers ask us to be open because they don't have families to go to or its too far to travel or its quite expensive to cook for everybody. So we do all the cookin', cleanin', fix dessert, we're good to go," said Mitchell.

Shellie has been serving up Thanksgiving meals since her restaurant opened a little over 10 years ago.

Turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans are on the menu, but burritos and breakfast are also served for those who aren't a fan of traditional holiday meals. And they're open all day, so stop by for some pie or just to say hi.

HELENA, Mont.- Vandalism is running rampant throughout the Helena Walking Mall. So far, 25 different spots have been hit, including a piece of history. The yellow, 1800s era trolly car is one of the most notable victims. The graffiti first made its appearance on Friday. The vandal has continued to add to the mess since then. The Helena Fire Department received some very exciting news yesterday. After decades of being short staffed and ill equipped, the department found out it has been awarded a large federal grant. $800,000 in federal funds will help pay for six new firefighters. A couple of months ago, voters approved a yearly mill levy. This grant will essentially help pay for an entire year of that levy, which will help ease costs for taxpayers.   "The amount of incidents we run is going u...
