Billings toddler recovering in Denver hospital after being mauled by dog

BILLINGS, Mont. -

UPDATE: Naomi Brown's father, Logan Scott Brown, sent KULR-8 a three page statement regarding the incident.

Logan Brown's full statement:

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Logan Brown.  I am the father of Naomi Brown and I am speaking out regarding my daughter and the dog attack.  First and foremost I need to make it very clear that the attacks on my mother, and my mother’s daycare, need to stop.  This happened during my visitation with my daughter at my residence, by our family dog.   I was present in the home at the time of the attack.  It was like any normal day for Naomi and I.   We got up, played some, began to get ready for our day.   I was not at work, Naomi was not in the daycare.  Naomi’s mother did not drop her off here for her job as false reporting has indicated.   Naomi’s mother was not present.

As any family would be in the face of tragedy, we are devastated on several levels.  We are mortified that it happened at all. Of course we are grateful that this did not happen to anyone else, adult or child.  This has been an experience that any person hopes they never have to live through or deal with.  This is a case of doing everything right and still having it go all wrong.  We purchased Titan from a family that we trust.  We knew both of the dog’s parents and temperaments.  We researched the breed of dog.  Naomi has been raised around pets… all sorts of pets.  There are dogs and animals present in her mother’s household, as there are here.  Both sets of grandparents have had pets, present and past.  Titan would have been 3 years old in March of this year.  He had been raised around all sorts of children, yes including daycare children, but also all of the grandchildren, any friends children who would come for bbq’s and other social gathers.  Our family did everything right in picking a pet/animal to be around children and family.  As any animal lover or pet owner, we love and trust our pets and we never think this will happen to us.  Titan had never been hidden from anyone at any time.  Titan had never shown any signs of aggression towards humans.  Titan was up to date on all shots and had just been to see the vet a few short months prior to this.   Again more false reporting.

Naomi is healing well.  She had a small laceration on her left ear that required 2 – 3 stitches.  Again false reporting had indicated that the ear was ripped off.  It was not. There is a laceration on her left cheek that required 5 stitches.  There was one puncture wound and that required I believe 3 stitches to close.  There is no damage to her eye.  Again false reporting had indicated otherwise.   It is swollen and bruised, but there is no broken bones, the eye itself was unharmed.  Her arm does need to be in a splint for another day as there were a couple of puncture wounds on the right arm.  The rest were superficial wounds that did not require stitching.

I would like to now address the media reports and acknowledge some things.  I want to make it very clear that not a single outlet of news media made ANY attempts to contact me.  Full blinders went on and it was as if I wasn’t even present or existed.

First, Q2, I want to commend and thank you for your professional way of handling this.  My mother has shared the texted communications between your reporter and herself.  You were definitely human first, reporter second, and respected that this was a family tragedy.

Second, KULR 8, I appreciate your manor of reporting.   I do want to make clear that the man that was spoken to is in fact Naomi’s grandfather.  He is my step dad, my friend, my shoulder, and at this time, my hero.  So please stop using terms such as “claims to be”.  Thank you for the understanding you gave Nick when you spoke to him.  Thank you for seeing the human side.

Third, to the Billings Gazette, I am disgusted and appalled by your tabloid, bottom feeding type of reporting.  Your entire news article was false.  Our family refused to give you any statements.  You printed lie, after lie, after lie.  You have put our family in danger and they no longer feel safe as we are dealing with individuals driving by our house and we now wonder and worry what is going to be the next tragedy? One of our family gets hurt by some crazy because of a false article written by tabloid reporters.

Next I would like to send out some special thank you’s and acknowledgments.

To Naomi’s mother, Shadow, and her husband John Card.   I know we have not always seen eye to eye.  I know there has been a lot of nasty things in the past.  Today I thank you.  We are aware that you did a radio interview where you stated that you do not blame anyone, you know this was just an accident, and I thank you for that.  I thank you for publicly acknowledging and recognizing that is just some freak thing that happened.  Like you said in the interview, we just don’t understand the why of Titan’s attack.  I thank you that we were able to put our differences aside and be there for our daughter.  I send thank you to John for the hours of conversation in the Denver hospital.  I truly hope that in the wake of this horrible event, we can come out of it better people, better parents, and learn to put the past behind us and understand that we all have the same common ground…. We love Naomi.  In the end I hope we are able to better communicate to each other, and to find a place where we can co-parent without all the past ugliness.  This has taught me that life is to short and we should never forget that tragedy can strike, at any time, to anyone.

A special thanks to the 911 responders.   Everyone involved was beyond awesome.

A super special thanks to our friends, family, my mother’s clients, and the out pour of strangers that have supported us.  In the sea of negativity and ugliness, you people have been a great shining light.  Our thanks can never be enough but know that every single one you have touched both myself, and my family.   I would love to list the specific names but that list would be too long.  Just know we are grateful.

Lastly, and most importantly, I need to send a special thanks to my step dad, Nick Repeta.  If he had not been right there, it is possible my daughter would be dead.  Nick is my hero. His quick response and reaction time saved her life. Despite more false reporting, Naomi was NOT unsupervised.  Her FAMILY was all around her.  This happened so fast, the entire situation happened in no more than 20 seconds start to finish.  My step dad was no more than 3 to 5 feet from the attack.  He pulled Titan off of his granddaughter and immediately started first aid.  By this time, other family members went into action.   911 was called.  I wish that we could give every single detail as to why Titan snapped, however this is not something anyone could have predicted.  It was a normal day for everyone.  Big brother had stuck around for the holidays to kick it and play video games.  Little sister had one more day of freedom before school started back up.  Mom and Nick working.  Naomi and I doing our normal routine.  Everyone just enjoying the last day of “freedom” after the holidays.

In closing, I would like to say that this has definitely taught me a few things.  1.  Never be too confident in life to think that tragedy or freak accidents cannot happen to you.    2.  Some humans are just ugly and nasty to each other.  Never under estimate a person’s ability to be hateful.  3.  Our community, as great as it once was, has begun to be filled with decay and ugliness.  As I read some of these comments and this article, I have to question where common sense went.  I question when people became so ugly and hateful.  I truly hope that some of these individuals take a good hard look at their own lives, their own actions, and question how they would feel and react if this had been their tragedy.  I honestly fear that some people have simply lost the ability to even do so.

Please feel free to print this letter, but I make the request that it is printed as a whole and not pieced apart leading to false implications of any sorts.  If you need to contact me, or would wish to speak to me direct, I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.  Please do not print my personal phone number.  I will speak to any media outlet except the Billings Gazette.   I will not give any face to face interviews or live interviews.  This is my statement on the situation and our family is really needing to be allow us to heal and move forward.

Sincerely,

Logan S. Brown

UPDATE: Shadow Card says her daughter is making much progress after being attacked by a bull mastiff at her grandmother's home.

Card says once Naomi's white blood cell count is normal, doctors will release Naomi from the hospital as early as today or tomorrow.

KULR-8 spoke with a man who claims to be Naomi's grandfather over the phone and he says the attack had no connection to the daycare because Naomi was not a daycare child and the attack occurred in an area of the home that is completely separate from daycare activities.

He told KULR-8 he did report the incident to the state and says he is heartbroken at what happened.

He says despite extensive research of the dog's breed, he had no idea it would attack.

KULR-8 contacted the Department of Public Health and Human Services regarding the incident, we'll have more information as it becomes available.

A Billings toddler was flown to a children's hospital in Denver after being attacked by a dog Tuesday.

Shadow Card is the mother of 3-year-old Naomi. Card says she got a call around noon Tuesday to go to Billings Clinic right away.

Card sent KULR-8 photos of her daughter after she was bitten by a bull mastiff on the hands, neck, ear, and eyelid while reportedly at her grandmother's home, which also provides daycare.

Card says her daughter was being watched by her father at the time and says no one seems to have witnessed what happened.

A man who claims to be Naomi's grandfather says the dog belongs to him and the daycare had nothing to do with the incident. He says his dog was about 2 ½ to 3 years of age and has since been put down by animal control.

Card says they're still at the children's hospital in Denver and doctors will wait to release Naomi from the hospital until her white blood cell count is normal and there is no sign of a fever for at least 24 hours.
