Severe Flooding Could Call for Flood Insurance

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Flooding has been reported throughout several cities in Montana, and if you don't have flood insurance it could cost you quite a bit of money.

According to FEMA flooding is the nation's most common and costly natural disaster, racking up millions of dollars in damages each year.

We spoke with Matt Rosendale, the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, and he stressed the importance of getting insured.

"We've got statistics that show that first of all there is a one in four chance that a homeowner will experience a flood over a span of 30 years," Rosendale said. "The average flood claim in Montana is $13,000."

Rosendale added that homeowners and renters insurance do not typically cover flood damage. It is not too late to sign up, however you need to sign up at least 30 days before flooding occurs.

If you do not have insurance, you want to make sure you check your home to make sure your drainage system is working.

FEMA has a supply checklist in the event you experience severe flooding. Some items include water, blankets, a first aid kid and important documents such as birth certificates and social security cards. You can view the entire list by clicking here.
