Man says he punched woman to "figure out" what was going on

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

On April 27th, GFPD Officers went to the Great Falls Clinic emergency room for a report of a woman who says she was assaulted by Cristo Caballero. The woman claimed approximately an hour before she came to the emergency room, Caballero had punched her in the face and ribs until she fell to the floor of her motor home where he proceeded to kick her. Her face was red and her legs bruised.

Court documents state the woman said the assault began that morning when she told Caballero she was leaving him, but as she began to pack her things, he hit her in the face. She said he had abused her since the beginning of their relationship and she always feared him. The woman told officers the only reason she had gotten away from him this morning was because a friend was walking nearby and heard the altercation. This is when the victim screamed for help and as Caballero was distracted, she escaped to a relative's nearby home.

The nursing staff at Great Falls Clinic emergency room advised officers the woman had a closed nasal fracture caused by being struck in the face.

According to charging documents, when officers spoke with Caballero back at the motor home, he said when the woman woke up that morning she began "freaking out" and swinging at him, so he hit her in the face in an attempt to "figure out" what was going on. Officers did note slight bruising to Caballero's face.

He had an active AP&P warrant for absconding and is on probation for possession of dangerous drugs. He also has charges for being a fugitive from Washington State and bail jumping in the past. Charging documents state he has two prior partner assault or domestic violence convictions.

Caballero is now charged with aggravated assault, partner or family member assault, and unlawful restraint. The State has requested his bond be set in the amount of $100,000.
