NWS urges residents near Sun River to prep for flooding

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Residents in the Sun River area we spoke with said this flooding is nothing compared to the past floods and one woman said despite what mother nature throws at them, her home has stood the test of time.

The Kerchal family has lived in this home just feet from the Sun River for 2 decades and Karen Kerchal said this is nothing new.

Kerchal said, "We have been through one flood and the people before us would have gone through a flood."

Kerchal who didn't want to go on camera told us the last big flooding she can remember was in 2006. When she along with her family and livestock had to evacuate but even that flood was not enough to do serious damage thanks to the construction of her home.

Kechal said the water never gone up into our family room which is a little lower than the rest of the house cause this is built on a hill.

She credits "the hill" for saving her family from thousands of dollars in damages over the years. When water does flood the area it surrounds her home like a moat. She said there's not much you can do but wait it out but flooding isn't necessarily the issue, it's the stuff that comes with it.

Trash is the biggest issue and the fast moving water brings in all types of junk.

She added there are a lot of risks that come with living so close to a river but they intend to stick it out.
