Carroll College launched a new undergraduate degree in data science yesterday. The program aims to propel students forward into one of the fastest growing careers.
The degree combines computer science, math, statistics and business with the goal of analyzing data in various forms. Students will be able to go into a variety of fields with this degree under their belt, specifically analytics and consulting.
So, whether they go into a business application, government work, or graduate school, they'll be prepared.
“So what makes this program special is really the degree of flexibility we have for the students as they come out. When we talk with people in business and industry they say they really need three things from their student and they don't really care as much about the major,” said Ted Wendt, Data Science Major Instructor.
Wendt says the three things employers look for in students are the following: to analyze information quickly, be organized and have subject knowledge. All of which are covered under this degree.
Several students have already decided to change their major to or add on data science to their class load.
