"Bash" prevents teen drinking

Posted: Updated:

Its the last day of school for students in Helena.  Sadly, many high schoolers celebrate the day by binge drinking. Now, one organization is doing it's part to help combat underage drinking.

Today, Youth Connections, hosted a "bash.” The event featured water balloon volleyball, rock climbing and free food. This was done alll in an effort to prevent and reduce substance abuse among teens.

The organization hosts a variety of events and programs to help maintain a safe future for Helena’s youth.

"Especially on a nice day, they might be hitting the lake or the woods to go drinking and so we're hoping to give them an alternative place that's safe and fun so they'll want to come here instead,” said Coleen Smith, Executive Director for Youth Connections.

Smith says research shows the best way to keep students from turning to alcohol and drugs is to give them an activity. Although no exact numbers were provided, organizers say the event has been very successful, especially for it only being the second year.
