Peanut butter fights hunger

Posted: Updated:

One car dealership in Great Falls is doing its part combat child hunger, but instead of stocking an entire pantry, they're focused on just one item.

Our Bliss Zechman explains how peanut butter is helping the hungry.

To some, this may just be a jar of crushed peanuts, but for others, its a life-saver.

"Peanut butter as a protein source is one of our biggest things we're looking for. It goes very quickly. We can't keep it on the shelves," said Sean Tatarka, Executive Director of the Great Falls Food Bank.

The Great Falls Food Bani gives out more than 150 jars of peanut butter every week. Kids like it and its easy for the elderly to chew and digest.

"Peanut butter is a big staple for us and it is for hungry people. Its a good source of protein. Its relatively inexpensive compared to other proteins. So it really is something we can keep on our shelves and offer to our agencies," said Tatarka.

That
s why the food bank has partnered with Bison Ford to bring in as many jars as possible to the Great Falls community.

"We really enjoy the collaboration with the food bank. It
s nice to see that there's that many less hungry folks in the community," said Whitney Olson, Vice President of Bison Ford.

This is the third year ford has collaborated with the food bank. The drive usually brings in about 700-800 pounds of peanut butter. That supply usually lasts the bank six months. However, with kids in the school system, Olson knows firsthand the need extends far beyond that.

"We
ve seen the need in their schools and that's something we can provide the hungry kids of Great Falls," said Olson.

Tatarka stressed the importance of summer food drives like this one. He says for some reason, people aren't as generous during the summer months.

"I joke that we can't get arrested during the summer. People are out having fun and forget that hunger lasts all year long."

Helping the hungry is as simple as test-driving a car. The dealership donates a container of peanut butter on your behalf if you do so.
Bison Ford says if you bring in a jar of peanut butter to donate, they will wash your car free.

The drive lasts until June 30.
