BILLINGS, Mont. -

The victim of Sunday's fatal carjacking has been identified as 81-year-old William Joy of Billings. The autopsy shows the victim died of multiple stab wounds.

Donald Gray Jr. faces two formal charges in connection with the death of an elderly Billings man Sunday. The charges are Deliberate Homicide, a felony, and Obstructing a Peace Officer, a misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Gray says he spotted W.J. at the post office on 15th St. West and Broadwater. The documents state that Gray was not familiar with Billings and wanted a ride back to North Carolina. Gray allegedly held W.J. at knifepoint and ordered him to drive away from the post office. The documents state that Gray admitted to stabbing W.J. multiple times at Lewis and Clark Middle School after W.J. became combative and tried to attract attention.

Gray remains in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility.

The Yellowstone County Coroner's Office is expected to identify the victim in the case Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, about 8 p.m. Sunday, an elderly man was abducted and killed during an attempted carjacking at 15th and Broadwater Ave. in Billings.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, and the suspect identified as Donald Gray Jr., a transient from North Carolina, struggled during which time the victim sustained fatal injuries.

Gray was stopped by a Billings Police patrol officer shortly after the homicide and was arrested.

Police say the victim died at the scene. Gray was arrested and transported to the Yellowstone County Detention Facility and remanded for deliberate homicide, possession of stolen property and obstructing a peace officer.

The BPD Detective Division is still investigating and more charges may follow.
