Last year… the Voyagers were one game away from winning the Pioneer League title. Looking ahead to the new season, the team is ready to pick up where they left off.
This year, the Voyagers will have only three players returning to the roster, including starting pitcher Chris Comito.
Now in his third year, Comito said he's excited for the season ahead, using last year's results as fuel to the fire in what he believes will be another successful year.
"I'm pretty happy with it, you know. I'm still playing baseball – that's all that matters," Comito said. "Hopefully we can get these [new] guys a ring. We haven't been able to do it the past two years. We've gotten really close, hopefully we can do it this year."
Comito is joined by fellow returners infielder Amado Nunez and former sixth-round draft pick Corey Zangari.
The 2018 draft class fared well for Esmay, as the Voyagers picked up fourteen picks from this year's MLB draft - five of which came from the first ten rounds.
"You're always excited. Talent is talent, and we have talent. And these guys can play," Esmay said. "It's on us and on me as the manager to kind of figure out how that plays out and keep them happy, and keep them coming back for more and all that stuff."
Although the team is made up of "newbies"… they can all agree on one thing:
They have their eye on redemption.
"We have a very good team," Comito said. "We've got some good draft guys, and some good guys from the Arizona League who played last year, and a few of us who are returning had some good seasons in the past. We should come together and do well."
SWX will be reporting live from the home opener against the Helena Brewers on Friday, June 15 at Centene Stadium in Great Falls.
