Missouri River Sees 3rd Highest Runoff in 120 Years

Posted: Updated:

The runoff in the Missouri River basin reached a total of 10 million acre-feet. An acre-foot means the amount of water it takes to cover one acre in a foot of water. John Remus, Chief of the Missouri River Basin Waste Division tells us the updated runoff reflects the melting of the above average mountain snow pack and moderate to heavy plains snow pack, as well as average rainfall that fell throughout the basin over the last four months. US Army Corps of Engineers said the agency will reduce releases from the Missouri dams and utilize the available flood control space in reservoirs to lessen flooding downstream.
