UPDATE: Wounded grizzly bear captured and removed along Marias River

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The wounded grizzly bear that was seen along Marias River has been captured and "removed from the population due to its condition and concern for human safety," according to Fish, Wildlife, and Parks.

According to a Facebook post by Montana FWP Prairie Bear Monitor, the bear was dragging its front right leg after being shot and could not put weight on it. This poses a health risk for the animal because it cannot use the paw to dig dens or dig for food. FWP also says the bear had found some apples and pet food and began looking for easy meals near homes.

FWP is currently investigating who shot and wounded the animal.

State and federal officials are working to capture a wounded young male grizzly bear along Marias River, just east of Interstate 15.

According to Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the bear was shot on July 26.

When the bear is captured, it will be taken to a veterinarian to figure out the extent of its injuries.

FWP is investigating the shooting and has notified landowners of the bear's presence.

People are urged to be cautious while on the on any river that heads east from the Rocky Mountain Front, as bears are moving along the waterways to eat wild fruits.
