Man is rescued from Bob Marshall with broken leg

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Rescue crews swooped in Tuesday to retrieve a man who had been lost in the Bob Marshall Wilderness for a day and a half.

The man has been identified as George Brown from California. He reportedly got separated from his group north of Benchmark on Sunday. His outfitting group said he left with just a back-pack and a couple of sandwiches to explore a cliff on his own. The area was extremely steep which caused Brown to lose his footing. He slid all the way down the cliff, which resulted in him breaking his left leg. Lewis And Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said he is grateful to make it out alive.

Sheriff Dutton said, "he is fortunate and he spent some cold nights up there and I don't know how much water he had but he had a couple of sandwichs but he really wasn't dressed for those conditions."

Brown was located off the trail about a mile north of Pretty Prairie. He was taken to the Pretty Prairie ranger station where he was transported to Benefis. Several organizations were involved in the search. Brown is expected to make a full recovery.
