Back to school vaccines and physicals

Posted: Updated:

GREAT FALLS- Believe it or not, we have less than a month before kids head back to school.

You may have checked off items on their school supply list, but what about their mandatory vaccines and checkups.

"We look at vaccines like D-Tap, Polio, Haemophilus influenzae," said Bowen Trystianson, a Public Health Nurse for the City-County Health Department.

Those are just some of the vaccines that the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services mandates grades K through 12 to have before they step foot into a classroom.

The Back to School Immunizations and Sports Physicals event tomorrow at Four Seasons Arena is an opportunity to get your child vaccinated in a one-stop shop set up.

"There cost varies depending on what vaccine is going to be given. We do accept all types of insurance, and absolutely no child is going to be denied a vaccine," said Trystianson.

Trystianson said the sooner your child is vaccinated, the better.

"The biggest times we need to catch kids is right before they start kindergarten, and then again at middle school age. There's boosters required at both of those times," said Trystianson.

If your child joined a fall sports team and needs a physical, the clinic is also offering them for $15 and must be paid in cash.

Physicals may seem trivial. However, if you're children don’t partake in them yearly, then it's difficult to monitor things like possible thyroid, cardiac, or other problems.

"Often times we find that you're gaining weight or losing weight, and we're trying to figure out what might be going on," said Diane Evans, a Nurse Practitioner for Benefis Pediatrics.

Cascade City-Health Department, Great Falls Clinic, Benefis Health System, Blue Cross Blue Shield Care Van and Great Falls Public Schools participate in this event.

Tomorrow’s clinic runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m
