Air quality dropping as wildfires across west ramp up

Posted: Updated:

It’s no question that fire season is upon us, and air quality around the state and right here in central Montana is diminishing.

The Department of Environmental Quality says that our air quality is moderate but is getting worse and expect it to become unhealthy for sensitive groups tonight and into the coming days, and it’s because of fires right here in Montana and all over the west.

We have some active fires in northwest Montana that are starting to send smoke out to the east. We also have real active fires in Washington, British Columbia, and then those real intense fires in California and Oregon, said Meteorologist Kristen Martin.

With all of these fires around the state, do expect the air quality to remain unhealthy to sensitive groups for a couple days.

There are certain limitations you should take when the air quality gets worse. Try and limit strenuous exercise outside, do not spend more than a couple hours outside if necessary, and if the smoke really bothers you, do not go outside at all.

If you would like hour by hour updates on the air quality in Montana you can visit the Department of Environmental Qualities website, here is the link. http://svc.mt.gov/deq/todaysair/
