Keep your food safe and beat the heat

Posted: Updated:

According to the CDC , one in six people, close to 50 million Americans, get food poisoning each year.
They have offer several tips to keep you safe.

First, keep your food prep area and your hands clean.
Second, separate all raw foods to avoid cross-contamination.
Third, make sure everything is cooked.
And it depends on the type and cut of meat, internal temperatures should be no lower than 145 degrees.
Last but not least make sure your food is refrigerated below forty degrees right away.

But, what happens to those foods in hot cars as you are driving to your destination?

When you pick up some meat and cheese or even some milk that is your family's hard earned  money. The last thing you want to have happen to the food is to have it spoil on the way home.

On the CDC's website they say germs can grow in food produces in two hours but in the heat they cut that time in half.
so how can you keep the food cold while driving home or out to the campsite?
one local meat cutter he says whether you wrap meat in paper bags or use a cooler you have to keeping it cold is the key
"You're risking Bactria the heat brings Bactria," said Matt Battle.

There is also insulated bags but when in doubt grab a coolers and ice.
"We have dry ice it well keep you cold stuff cold longer but you have to be carefully don't handle it with your bare hands don't inhale the fumes from it. we also have regular bags of ice another excellent option there's no special instructions there," said Shirley Gillaspie
She says dry ice is only to keep food cold. Adding solid Carbonmonoxide and can burn you hands and cautions to handle with care.
