East Helena has a new police chief, who just started last week. Chief Michael Sanders tells us he has several plans for the growing community.
Although he is new to the position, Sanders is neither a stranger to law enforcement nor to the Helena community. He graduated from high school in Helena and went on to get his undergraduate degree from Carroll College.
He then spent a few years working for the Helena Police Department. Sanders has spent the last 20-plus years working for the Drug Enforcement Administration.
He says he looks forward to using his skill set to help the East Helena community.
“One of my main priorities is to erase any kinds of barriers between or walls between the police and the community. There's only five officers out here including myself and the community has a better grasp of what's going on,” said Sanders.
The new chief says getting the gig was a very lengthy process. He applied for the job back in December of last year and he was sworn in just last Wednesday.
Now that he's in power, his priorities are to make the department more effective and efficient. He's hoping to increase training and professionalism throughout the department.
