Griz running back Calhoun charged with misdemeanor assault

MISSOULA -

University of Montana football player Jeremy Calhoun has been charged with assault for his involvement in a fight that occurred in May.

Prosecutors say Calhoun was involved in a late night fight outside of Stockman’s Bar in Missoula on May 5, 2018.

Court documents say Calhoun punched Aaron Misipeka-Ward, a former Griz basketball player.

Misipeka-Ward was trying to break up a fight and Calhoun turned and punched Misipeka-Ward, knocking out two of his teeth, according to court documents. Misipeka-Ward was transported to St. Patrick Hospital where he found out he needed teeth implants and oral surgery.

Five days later Calhoun talked with Missoula Police about the incident. Court documents say he admitted to being involved in the fight and punching the victim.

Missoula Police also reviewed surveillance video that reportedly shows Misipeka-Ward attempting to pull Calhoun away from the fight, when the Griz player turned around and punched the man in the mouth.

Calhoun is set to appear in Missoula County Justice Court at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Calhoun could face up to six months in jail and up to a $500 fine for the misdemeanor assault charge.

On August 31, the eve of the home opener for the Griz football team, UM athletics announced Calhoun would be suspended for two games for violating the student athlete code of conduct.

Our SWX team is reaching out to the University of Montana to see how the criminal charge will impact Calhoun's status on the team.
