A historic vote in Washington Thursday for the Little Shell Chippewa tribe and their fight for federal recognition.

For the first tI'me the U.S. House Representatives approved a bill regarding the tribe's push for recognition.
"With federal recognition the little shell tribe and its members would become eligible for all services and benefits provide by the federal government to federally recognized tribes," said Rep. Greg Gianforte.

Treaties that are with any nation in the world symbolizes a relationship and acknowledges both sides are sovereign nations.
"Government to government relationship between the tribes that  honors the treaties that basically ceded what now is the united states of America," said Tribal Chairman Gerald Gray.

" Montanans, Montana tribes and the State of Montana all recognize that the Little Shell Tribe is a part of our state’s rich culture and history. I support their efforts to become federally recognized and it is time to finally grant the Little Shell Tribe the recognition they are owed.," said Gov. Steve Bullock.

The State Attorney General Tim Fox agreed.

“Montana has recognized the Little Shell band of the Chippewa Tribe since 2003, and federal recognition if long overdue. I am delighted to see this legislation is moving forward in Congress” said A.G. Fox.

The act directs the secretary of the interior to acquire for the benefit of the tribe trust title for 200 acres of land with in the tribes service area to used for tribal base.

So what does this mean for non tribal members?

"Additional economic prosperity that should have a positive impact on the great falls community. as they prosper others will prosper as well. im a business guy so it just makes sense to me," said Rep Greg Gianforte.
The bill is headed to the Senate if it passes, it then heads to the President's desk where he will need to sign it into law.
