New legislation seeks to ease travel headaches for nursing moms

Posted: Updated:

New legislation is in the works to make traveling easier for nursing moms, and changes are coming to Missoula's airport.

Senator Steve Daines is pushing for airports to help nursing moms by adding dedicated rooms for infant care, according to a U.S. Senate press release. They're called "Mother's Rooms," and the goal is to get them in medium to large-sized airports.

The Missoula International Airport is considered a small airport. Missoula International Airport director Cris Jensen says the airport is adapting to serve the needs of nursing mothers, even though it isn’t directly affected by the new legislation.

“One of the things that we've been talking about are family restrooms, lactation rooms, things of that nature that will provide the services our customers need," Jensen said. "So even while there's not a requirement for us to provide those spaces, we will have those spaces."

Jensen expects the first set of nursing rooms in the Missoula airport to be finished in 2021.

In the meantime, new moms are encouraged to contact the airport if they'd like to make arrangements for privacy.

Jensen says the idea of creating spaces for mothers and families with small children isn’t a new idea for the airport. Jensen says the plan has been in the works for more than 14 years.
