Health hazards parents should be aware of on Halloween

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Ahead of Halloween Wednesday night, experts say there are certain health hazards parents need to be aware of.

Studies show children are twice as likely to die on Halloween than any other day of the year as they Trick-or-Treat along our streets. When it comes to dangers on Halloween, the statistics are shocking as kids head out to Trick-or-Treat.

According to a study by State Farm, more than four million children died on Halloween between 1990 and 2010. More than a quarter of the deaths occurred between six and seven at night, with 70% happening in the middle of the block, away from a crosswalk or intersection.

Parents should make sure their child's costume has sports reflective tape, and kids should carry a flashlight or glow stick. Another important thing to be aware of is allergies.

To meet the needs of all your Trick-or-Treaters, you can join the Teal Pumpkin Project, which suggests having non-food treats on hand.
Also, beware of decorative contacts. There have been cases of children going blind after using cheap over the counter contacts for Halloween because they often are not regulated by the FDA.

Tripping and falling, pumpkin carving injuries, and getting poked in the eye by costume props are also key risks on Halloween. Make sure your child is being supervised at all times, even when Trick-or-Treating, to avoid getting hurt.
