Soil Cycle to collect perished pumpkins around Missoula

Posted: Updated:

Soil Cycle wants to fight food waste during the holidays, and the group is starting by re-harvesting old Jack O’ Lanterns from front porches across Missoula.

Soil Cycle is recruiting volunteers to bike around the city, knock on doors and collect drooping, moldy pumpkins. The group will take the pumpkins to Garden City Compost, and the pumpkins will be turned into compost for springtime gardening.  Soil Cycle founder Caitlyn Lewis hopes the program will help people bond while thinking about the environment.

“This is something I could potentially do with a pickup truck by myself, but I really want to get volunteers and the community involved,” Lewis said. “I think the more people that know about their local food system will be stewards of the earth for longer than just a day.”

Lewis encourages anyone with a bike, a bike trailer or a desire to help to volunteer. The group will ride around the city from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 and again at the same time on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Missoula residents can also drop their old pumpkins off at Free Cycles Missoula during that time frame.

Volunteers can email soilcyclemissoula@gmail.com to sign up.
