CMC to offer free cervical cancer screening day

Posted: Updated:

The Missoula Community Medical Center will offer free cervical cancer screenings at its Cancer Care Center on Thursday, November 8.

The CDC says cervical cancer rates are dropping across the U.S., but regular screenings and other preventative steps are necessary to keep those numbers down. The CDC recommends that all women between the ages of 21 and 65 be screened for cervical cancer every three years.  The HPV vaccine is another tool that’s used to fight the cancer before it can take hold.

CDC data from 2015 says more than 4,000 women in the U.S. died from cervical cancer that year, and about seven in every 100,000 women in Montana will be diagnosed with the disease each year. Community Physician Group MD Kristin Anderson says cervical cancer screenings are a crucial part of catching the cancer, and says women shouldn’t skip those appointments.

“I think there is some thought or feeling that people don’t need to get screened as often, or don’t need screening that is recommended,” Anderson said. “That is just not the case. This is a preventable disease in many cases, and that’s why it’s so important to take advantage of screening options.”

Missoula women can get a free screening at the CMC Community Cancer Care and Prevention Center from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 8.  Appointments are required, and they can be made by calling the center at 406-327-3911.
