Isaiah Martin of Harlem...and his broken backboard.

Harlem forfeits for broken backboard

Photo by: Pat Foster, of Havre

CUT BANK, Mont. (AP) - The Harlem boys basketball team had to
forfeit its first-round game at the Northern B divisional
tournament Thursday after a player broke a backboard while
attempting a slam dunk during warmups.
Shelby advances to Friday's semifinals against Fairfield, which
beat Poplar 82-52 in the opening game.
Under Montana High School Association rules, if a player dunks
or attempts to dunk the ball during warmups, while the officials
are on the floor, his or her team is given a technical foul. During
tournament games, a pre-game dunk or attempt that breaks the rim or
the backboard results in the game being forfeited and the player's
school must pay to replace the broken equipment.
Tournament officials did not identify the player involved.

The backboard was not cracked beforehand. Rules are rules. They say no dunking in warm ups! PERIOD! Don't blame the rules for Harlem not making state. They had an opportunity. They got beat on the floor by a good Cut Bank team. So much for conspiracy

It was a great dunk and with his siize and wieght I find it hard to believe it broke without having a prior problem, (crack, etc.) Players have been dunking forever in warmups. That back board had not been replaced for 17 years. Go Figure, Bad Break!

nice one

Paula the point ins that it was in warm ups. If they broke it during the game they wouldn't forfeit. They make rules like this for exactly this reason.

BBFan says ... on Wednesday, Mar 11 at 4:36 PM

It's a rule, they knew the rule. Harlem coaches had a COPY of the rule with them to use against Wolf Point. It was not a faulty backboard- I saw the illegal dunk. Cut Bank beat Harlem, Shelby beat CB. Shelby would have beat Harlem. End of story.

The backboard should have gotten inspected before the game. who knows if it was a faulty or not. I have been to that gym many times and i have seen many people hang on that rim. It was bound to be broken sooner or later. They should get to play.

bummer. what the hell were you thinking? you know high school backboards suck... slacker.

KJ Foster says ... on Wednesday, Mar 11 at 2:31 PM

It was the "visiting" team and were the low seed. They were going to lose anyway. It may have been the high point of the season. Look at all the press the team is receiving!

backboards should be inspected before each game if this rule stays! word is a player from the previous game cracked the backboard. was it a dunk or an attempted dunk? all said and done its a terrible rule.
