CUT BANK, Mont. (AP) - The Harlem boys basketball team had to
forfeit its first-round game at the Northern B divisional
tournament Thursday after a player broke a backboard while
attempting a slam dunk during warmups.
Shelby advances to Friday's semifinals against Fairfield, which
beat Poplar 82-52 in the opening game.
Under Montana High School Association rules, if a player dunks
or attempts to dunk the ball during warmups, while the officials
are on the floor, his or her team is given a technical foul. During
tournament games, a pre-game dunk or attempt that breaks the rim or
the backboard results in the game being forfeited and the player's
school must pay to replace the broken equipment.
Tournament officials did not identify the player involved.
